Summer’s here! That means chalet trips, pools, and cocktails. Maybe people aren’t travelling so much this summer, but if you’ve got a shopping getaway on your mind, then get your seaside resort inspiration going and check out the great boutiques that Old Montreal and the Old Port have to offer.
Since masks have become henceforth required to enter public spaces, like these boutiques we’re showing you, you should visit VoltDesign before starting this shopping spree.
Here, they have a whole collection of masks, and each is just as beautiful as the next in both colour and design. You will definitely find the mask that accents your face, and in this you can be sure – their boutique in its entirety is a pure joy.
A few minutes’ walk east from Place d’Youville, you will find John Fluevog’s boutique. Here, you will be able to find a pair of iconic and oh-so-original shoes for yourself. And they have a huge selection of kicks that seem to get more colourful the more you search through them. Then once you get your shoes, you gotta accessorize with some bottoms and accessories. Grab a new pair of pants or shorts and show off what you got!
Can you picture a summer wardrobe without some Breton stripes? Impossible! We love this summer staple, and Vaisseau D’Or’s Saint James brand checks all of our boxes. What sets it apart from other pieces is its anti-UV material that can protect your skin from sun rays. It comes in dresses (our FAVORITE), shirts, and sweaters – now all you have to do is choose the pretty marine stripes that suit you best.
As we continue down St-Paul, you will find Sarah Pacini, where their Indigo collection will charm you as easily as it charmed us. Azures and marine hues are abundant. Their linen shirts, textured cardigans, and pants will give you a chic vacation style; a certain feeling of carefree riverside escapades. We love the lightness this pretty selection offers!
The Walk-In offers a huge range of backpacks from the Canadian brand Herschel. From city bags, to weekend bags, travel bags, or even hip packs and messenger bags, you can’t help but fall in love with this wide variety of bags. We can’t resist the “City” model, with its geometric, yet simplistic allure.
Once again on your way, you’ll eventually get to Bonsecours Market which itself holds some pretty special shops. This is actually the place where la Grande Braderie, the great Quebec fashion celebration, is held, but it is still closed at the time of writing this. We’re impatiently awaiting its reopening!
When protecting yourself from the sun, you also need to think about shielding your head. A great hat from Tête à Chapeau on the quay is the perfect stop. You can pick different styles, colours, and materials from this little kiosk. Are you going to try out the famous “bob” that has taken the fashion world by storm this summer? We’ve already got ours! (We want to make a special mention for the linen one, which allows for great, refreshing airflow!)
Don’t forget about jewelry! Accent du Monde is another little booth on the riverside that you shouldn’t pass up. Treat yourself with a pair of brass Moroccan earrings with cotton pompom accents; you’re on vacation, live a little! This handmade designer jewelry will speak for itself, and you will love gifting them to yourself or your loved ones.
Need an ice cream break to refresh yourself? Le Vieux has several great places that we’ve already compiled in another article, for those times when you need to take it slow…
Sandrini is another great place to find the shoes that fit your feet. To combat the heat we’re in, we’ve found the perfect line of shoes in their “Fantasy Sandals” collection. Airy, colourful, and crafted from great materials, our eyes were drawn right away to the Sansa model. Created from a mixture of materials, its brilliance and feminine style are becoming, yet still comfortable enough to stand up to the paved roads of our neighbourhood.
Swell and Ginger holds a magnificent selection of jewelry and accessories to discover. Here, we treated ourselves to the Moroccan Boho straw shoulder bag, perfect for summer outings to the park or the beach at Old Port. We also picked out the Marzio Belt for ourselves, which goes perfect with our bag, and will prove to be the perfect accessory to bring our whole outfit together. You may also end up leaving with one of their gorgeous summer dresses… we just want to warn you now!
Now to add the final touches to your look, you might want to grab some sunglasses that will serve you well everywhere you go. Bar à Lunettes on McGill Street has a cute selection of shades for the whole family. Plus, their opticians will be able to advise you on what will best work for you, according to your needs (you active types, we’re looking at you!). Our recommendation is the Marie-Sophie Dion collection – cute Quebec-made frames that will complement any face.
The swimming trend du jour is without a doubt the joyous, creative, and, above all, comfortable bathing suits from Mimi & August. Whether you’re a one piece fan, or more of a two piece wearer, between their irresistible patterns, inclusive and respectful brand approach, and the great cuts of each article, this is what we’ll be wearing to the spa, the river, or the beach!
We also highly recommend that you consider stopping by Clusier. The owner, Pierre-Benoit Duhamel, has mastered the art of bringing together everything necessary for a look that is at once relaxed, yet elegant, and has fully succeeded in giving personality and a chic and coherent harmony to each of his clients’ looks. From masks to polos, to shorts, jeans, and even blazers and jackets, he has anything you might need to completely overhaul your wardrobe for the season.
The Harricana par Mariouche boutique is a little piece of paradise, and pays homage to our artisanal savoir-faire. Holding quite the selection of straw paper and cotton hats, their products are crafted in their workshop, and are, of course, completely handcrafted in Montreal. We love the Markus, and its ombre dye that gives it a retro feel. There’s also the very trendy Felix Fedora, which makes for a perfect transitional look between seasons!
Now that our little fashion tour is over, all that’s left for us to do is to suggest taking a refreshment break on one of the many terraces that Old Montreal and the Old Port has to offer. Make the most of this summer in our neighbourhood!
